What Does a Skin Rash Feel Like With Ringworm?

Most people with Ringworm notice skin rash with itching, scaling, and an edge that may feel more irritated than the centre. The area can feel dry, rough, or mildly burning, while the middle may look clearer as the outer border expands. Symptoms vary by body site, skin tone, and the type of fungus involved.

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the outer skin, not a worm. It often produces a gradually enlarging patch with a raised, flaky, or rough border. It may be ring-shaped, but it does not always form a neat circle. Itching can be stronger after sweating or when clothing rubs the area. Scratching may leave tiny breaks in the skin and can spread the infection to nearby skin or another person. A rash with similar sensations can have other causes, so appearance and feeling alone cannot confirm ringworm.

Keep the area clean and thoroughly dry, especially after bathing or exercise. Avoid scratching, sharing towels or clothing, and covering the patch with a tight, non-breathable dressing. Arrange a medical assessment if the rash involves the scalp, beard area, nails, eyes, or a large area of skin, or if it is spreading despite appropriate treatment. Seek prompt care for marked pain, warmth, pus, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or widespread blistering. Children, people with diabetes, and people with a weakened immune system may need tailored treatment. A clinician can examine a persistent or unclear rash and check whether a different condition is causing the symptoms.

Ask whether the border, scale, and location fit ringworm or another rash; whether a skin scraping or another examination is needed; which treatment is appropriate for that body site; how long to continue it after the rash improves; and how to reduce spread to household members or pets.
