What does skin rash feel like with psoriasis?

Psoriasis can produce raised, inflamed areas covered by dry, silvery or whitish scale. The skin may feel rough and tight, especially over joints, the scalp, or other areas that bend or rub. Itching is common, and scratching can leave the surface raw or cause small cracks. Symptoms can vary from a small area to several body regions.

A rash with scale is not enough to confirm psoriasis because eczema, fungal infections, and other conditions may look or feel similar. A clinician can compare the distribution, surface, nail changes, and symptom history.

Apply a plain moisturiser regularly, particularly after washing, to soften scale and reduce tightness. Use lukewarm water, mild cleansers, and soft fabrics. Try not to scrape scale or scratch the plaques. If the rash affects sleep, movement, the scalp, nails, or sensitive skin, ask a clinician about a treatment plan suited to that location.

Arrange medical review for a new, spreading, painful, or persistently itchy rash, or when cracks are bleeding or showing signs of infection such as increasing warmth, swelling, or drainage. Seek urgent care for widespread redness with feeling unwell, or severe eye involvement. Joint pain, stiffness, or swelling alongside a rash also merits assessment.

Ask whether the findings fit psoriasis, what may be triggering flares, and how to care for scaled or cracked skin. Tell your doctor about nail changes, joint symptoms, scalp involvement, sleep disruption, and products that have irritated the rash.
