What Do Skin Lumps Feel Like With Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma can appear as a shiny or pearly bump, a firm growth, or a scaly area that repeatedly crusts or bleeds. It may be skin-coloured, pink, or darker than the surrounding skin. A lesion can feel rough or tender, but sensation varies and does not reliably identify the cause. Sun-exposed sites such as the face, ears, scalp, neck, and hands are commonly examined closely.

Do not squeeze, cut, or repeatedly scratch a lump. Take a clear photograph and note changes in size, surface, bleeding, tenderness, or healing, then arrange a skin assessment if it persists or changes. Use shade, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen to reduce further ultraviolet exposure while waiting for advice.

Book a medical review for a lump that grows, repeatedly bleeds or crusts, forms an ulcer, becomes tender, or fails to heal. Seek prompt assessment for a lesion near the eye, nose, or ear, or for bleeding that does not stop with firm gentle pressure. Diagnosis may require examination and a skin sample; appearance alone cannot confirm it.

Ask what features make the lump concerning, whether dermoscopy or a biopsy is needed, and how to protect the area while it is being assessed. Share its timeline, previous bleeding or crusting, sun exposure, and any earlier skin cancers.
