What Does Crusting Skin Feel Like With Impetigo?

Impetigo often starts as small blisters or shallow sores. Fluid can leak onto nearby skin and dry into a yellow-brown or honey-coloured crust. The area may be tender when touched, and the crust may feel tight as the skin moves. New spots can appear near the original area because the infection can spread through contact or scratching. Crusting alone cannot identify the cause, so examination may be needed.

Clean gently with water and mild cleanser, then pat dry. Do not peel the crusts or share towels, bedding, clothing, or cosmetics. Wash hands after touching the area and keep fingernails short. A clinician may prescribe a topical or oral treatment depending on the extent and location. Follow the prescribed course and ask when it is safe to return to close-contact activities.

Arrange prompt assessment if sores are spreading, painful, swollen, hot, or draining, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Seek urgent help for swelling around an eye, severe illness, or rapidly worsening skin. Children, people with weakened immunity, and anyone with extensive sores should obtain advice early.
