Most people with Syringoma notice skin bumps that feel firm and smooth, remain close to the skin surface, and are usually not painful. They may be skin-coloured, yellowish, or slightly darker than nearby skin. The bumps are often small and grouped, especially around the lower eyelids, although they can occur in other areas.

A syringoma develops from cells associated with sweat ducts. This structure can create a compact papule rather than a soft or fluid-filled spot. Syringomas are benign, but several other conditions can also produce small bumps around the eyes. They may remain stable for a long time, and rubbing them generally does not make them disappear. Repeated irritation can make the surrounding skin more noticeable or uncomfortable.
