What Does Shoulder Pain Feel Like With Cervical Radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root in the neck is irritated or compressed. The shoulder discomfort may feel burning, electric, sharp, or shooting rather than remaining in one spot. Neck position, looking up, or turning the head can change the symptoms. Tingling, pins and needles, altered sensation, or weakness may follow part of the arm into the hand.

Because nerve symptoms can overlap with shoulder disorders, the distribution of symptoms and a neck and arm examination matter. A painful shoulder does not by itself identify a neck nerve problem. Note what movements change the pain and whether your grip or arm strength has changed.

Keep gently active and change positions regularly, while avoiding movements that clearly intensify spreading pain or tingling. Use a comfortable posture for reading and screen work, and do not force neck stretches during a flare. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess neck movement, reflexes, sensation, and strength before selecting exercises.

Record whether symptoms reach the forearm or hand, which fingers feel different, and whether coughing or neck movement affects them. This information can make the assessment more focused.

Arrange medical review for persistent radiating pain, new tingling, or weakness. Seek urgent care for rapidly worsening weakness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, severe headache with neck pain, or symptoms after major trauma.
