What does shortness of breath feel like with panic disorder?

Short answer
Shortness of Breath is a very common presentation of Panic Disorder. During an attack, it may feel like air hunger, rapid breathing, chest tightness, or an inability to take a satisfying breath.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How panic-related breathlessness may feel
Panic can trigger a sudden surge of fear and changes in breathing. You may start breathing quickly, feel unable to slow it down, or keep trying to take deeper breaths without relief. Tingling around the mouth or fingers, dizziness, trembling, sweating, a pounding heart, nausea, and a sense of danger may occur at the same time. The episode may peak quickly and then ease, leaving fatigue or worry about another attack. Similar symptoms can occur with asthma, heart problems, infection, or other urgent conditions, so a familiar pattern should not be used to dismiss a new or different episode.
What to do during and after an episode
Move to a safe place and sit with your shoulders relaxed. Breathe gently and slowly, allowing the out-breath to be comfortable rather than forcing a deep breath. Remind yourself that the sensation can pass, while noticing whether the pattern is changing. Once settled, arrange a clinical review if episodes recur, interfere with life, or have not been assessed. A clinician can check for physical causes and discuss talking therapy, breathing practice, or medicines when appropriate. Avoid breathing into a paper bag.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services for severe or unfamiliar breathlessness, persistent chest pressure or pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, coughing blood, or inability to speak in full sentences. Seek urgent assessment when symptoms begin with exertion, do not settle as expected, or occur with a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Do not assume a dangerous physical problem is panic without assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which physical causes should be checked, how to recognise your early warning signs, and what breathing technique is suitable. Ask about psychological treatment, medicines, follow-up, and the symptoms that should lead you to emergency care.

Questions people ask
Can panic disorder cause a feeling of not getting enough air?
Yes. Panic-related changes in breathing can create air hunger, chest tightness, and repeated attempts to take a deeper breath.
How can I tell panic breathlessness from a medical emergency?
You cannot reliably do this from the sensation alone. New, severe, unfamiliar, persistent, or changing symptoms need urgent medical assessment, especially with chest pain, fainting, blue lips, or confusion.
