What does shortness of breath feel like with bronchiectasis?

You may become winded walking, climbing stairs, or doing household tasks. A daily cough with thick or increased mucus can make breathing feel clogged or effortful. Breathlessness may worsen during a chest infection, when mucus changes colour or amount, or when you feel feverish and more unwell. Wheezing, tiredness, chest discomfort, and reduced activity tolerance can accompany it. Other lung and heart conditions can feel similar, so symptoms need to be considered in context.

Use the airway-clearance technique, inhalers, and other treatments prescribed for you. Drink fluids if your clinician has not advised a restriction, pace activities, and avoid smoke. Note changes in breathlessness, cough, mucus amount or colour, fever, and energy. Contact your respiratory team or clinician promptly if these changes suggest an infection or if your usual treatment is no longer controlling symptoms.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to speak in complete sentences. Coughing up a large amount of blood, or blood with worsening breathlessness or dizziness, also needs emergency assessment. Sit upright while waiting and take your prescribed medicines as directed.
