What does shortness of breath feel like with atrial fibrillation?

You may feel winded after a short walk, notice that normal tasks take more effort, or feel unable to draw a full breath. An irregular or fast heartbeat can occur at the same time as fluttering, pounding, weakness, light-headedness, chest discomfort, or tiredness. Episodes may start suddenly or come and go. Breathlessness is not specific to atrial fibrillation, so a clinician may need to check your pulse, heart rhythm, lungs, and other factors.

Pause, sit upright, and note when the breathlessness and heartbeat change began. If you have a prescribed plan or medicines, follow it exactly and do not take extra doses unless instructed. Keep a record of triggers, activity, pulse readings if your clinician has taught you to take them, and associated symptoms. Arrange a prompt review for a new irregular heartbeat or a change in your usual pattern.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, chest pain or pressure, fainting, new confusion, sudden weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or a very fast heartbeat with marked dizziness. Urgent assessment is also needed when symptoms are sudden and severe or do not settle. Do not drive yourself while seriously breathless or faint.
