What does shortness of breath feel like with acute bronchitis?

Shortness of Breath is a common presentation of Acute Bronchitis. Inflamed airways and mucus can make breathing feel noisy, tight, or harder than usual. You may notice wheezing, a need to take deeper breaths, or breathlessness when walking, climbing stairs, or having a coughing spell. The cough may bring up mucus and can leave the chest and abdominal muscles tired. Breathlessness that is severe, rapidly worsening, or present while resting should not be assumed to be simple bronchitis.

Rest, drink fluids if you can swallow normally, and avoid smoke, vaping, dust, and strong fumes. Sit upright or lean slightly forward if that makes breathing easier. Use an inhaler only as prescribed, and do not start antibiotics or another person’s medicine without medical advice. Arrange a clinical review if breathlessness is new, persists, interferes with normal activity, or occurs in someone with asthma, heart disease, or another lung condition.

Call emergency services for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, fainting, new confusion, or chest pressure. Seek prompt medical care for coughing blood, high or returning fever, marked weakness, or breathlessness that is getting worse. A clinician may need to check oxygen levels and listen to the chest because pneumonia, asthma, or another problem can resemble bronchitis.

Ask whether your symptoms fit acute bronchitis, whether you need an inhaler or chest examination, and which changes should trigger urgent help. Mention when the breathlessness began, whether it occurs at rest, your cough and mucus, fever, smoking or vaping exposure, and any previous lung illness.
