What does severe abdominal pain in pregnancy feel like with ectopic pregnancy?

Pain may be low in the abdomen or pelvis and can sit more strongly on one side. It may begin as a constant ache, become cramping or sharp, or spread toward the shoulder when internal bleeding irritates the diaphragm. Vaginal bleeding, dizziness, weakness, or rectal pressure can occur too.

Most people with Ectopic Pregnancy notice severe abdominal pain in pregnancy, but abdominal pain has many possible causes. The pattern cannot confirm the diagnosis. A pregnancy test, examination, ultrasound, and blood tests may be needed to locate the pregnancy and assess your condition.

If you are pregnant or could be pregnant and have severe abdominal pain, contact emergency services or go to an emergency department now. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or weak. Tell the clinician when the pain started, where it is located, whether bleeding is present, and the date of your last menstrual period if known.

Call for emergency help immediately if pain is sudden or intense, or if you have fainting, shoulder-tip pain, marked dizziness, heavy bleeding, pale or clammy skin, or unusual weakness. A ruptured ectopic pregnancy can cause internal bleeding and needs immediate treatment.
