What does seizure feel like with heat stroke?

Heat stroke can disrupt brain function. A person may become confused, unusually drowsy, agitated, unsteady, or unable to answer normally before a seizure. The body may stiffen and jerk, and awareness may be lost. Skin can feel very hot and may be dry or sweaty; headache, nausea, weakness, or collapse may accompany the episode. The seizure itself can be difficult to assess because the person may remain confused after the movements stop.

Call emergency services immediately. Move the person to shade or a cool place, remove excess clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths, cool water, and airflow. Protect the head during movements and turn the person onto their side once safe. Do not restrain them, put anything in the mouth, or give drinks to someone who is confused or unconscious. Stay with them and note the timing.

A seizure in suspected heat stroke is an emergency even if it stops quickly or the person seems better. Emergency assessment is needed for confusion, fainting, hot skin, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or inability to drink safely. Do not leave the person alone or send them to rest without evaluation.

After emergency care, ask what caused the overheating, whether any medicines or illness increased the risk, and how to return safely to activity. Share the setting, heat exposure, fluids, exertion, and the person’s recovery pattern.
