What does scar revision surgery treat?

A surgeon may revise a scar that has healed with a thick ridge, a broad or irregular line, a depressed area, or a direction that pulls on nearby skin. Revision can involve removing part of the scar and closing the skin carefully, changing the scar’s orientation, or releasing tight scar tissue that restricts movement. Burn scars and hypertrophic scars may need a tailored plan because their behaviour differs from a simple healed cut.

The goal is improvement rather than erasing the original injury. A new surgical line will also need time to mature, and the final appearance can depend on the scar’s location, depth, skin tension, and healing pattern.

During assessment, show the clinician how the scar feels, whether it itches or hurts, and whether it limits movement. Bring details about the original injury or operation and any earlier treatments. After surgery, follow dressing and wound-care instructions, protect the area from unnecessary tension, and avoid picking at crusts. Your clinician may discuss silicone gel sheets or another method once the wound has closed.

Seek prompt medical advice if a revised wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, opens, drains cloudy fluid, or is accompanied by fever. Contact the surgical team if bleeding does not settle with the advised pressure. A scar that rapidly enlarges, becomes very tender, or develops a new change away from the expected healing pattern also deserves assessment.

Ask which scar feature the operation is intended to improve, whether movement will be addressed, what closure method is planned, and how long wound care may last. Ask how recurrence or thickening will be monitored, when silicone care may begin, and what signs should lead you to call.
