What does runny nose feel like with influenza?

Runny Nose is a common presentation of Influenza and may come with nasal irritation, clear drainage, and a suddenly unwell feeling. Sneezing or congestion may occur, but influenza often brings stronger whole-body symptoms than a simple nasal illness.

The nose can feel wet, blocked, or sore from frequent wiping, while mucus may begin thin and become thicker as the illness continues. Feverishness, chills, headache, muscle aches, marked tiredness, sore throat, and cough can appear with the nasal symptoms. A runny nose alone cannot distinguish influenza from other respiratory infections. Symptoms often start around the same period, so note how quickly you became unwell and whether breathing or energy levels are changing. People with long-term health conditions may need advice earlier.

Rest and drink enough to avoid dehydration. Saline spray, gentle nose blowing, and a clean humidified environment may ease irritation. Stay away from close contact while feverish or acutely unwell, and wash hands after coughing or blowing your nose. Ask a pharmacist about suitable fever or pain relief, especially if you take regular medicines or have liver, kidney, stomach, or heart problems. Antiviral treatment may be considered by a clinician for some people, particularly when started early.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician if you cannot drink, symptoms worsen after initial improvement, or you are pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised, or living with a long-term condition. A child who is unusually sleepy or struggling to breathe needs prompt assessment.
