What Does Red Eye Feel Like With a Foreign Body in the Eye?

Red Eye is a very common presentation of Foreign Body in the Eye. It may feel gritty or scratchy, as though something is trapped under the eyelid, with watering, stinging, light sensitivity or a strong urge to rub the eye. The discomfort can be focused in one spot or become more noticeable with blinking.

Most people with Foreign Body in the Eye notice red eye because the surface becomes irritated and its small blood vessels widen. Dust, sand, an eyelash, cosmetic material or a small fragment can trigger this response. A foreign body under the upper eyelid may keep rubbing the eye whenever you blink. Persistent pain, blurred vision or marked sensitivity to light can also occur if the surface has been scratched, so symptoms should not be judged by redness alone.

Wash your hands, remove contact lenses if you wear them, and let the eye water naturally. Rinse it gently with clean lukewarm water or sterile saline while holding the eyelids open. Do not rub the eye, use tweezers, or try to scrape a visible object from the coloured part of the eye. Avoid wearing contact lenses until the irritation has settled and a clinician has advised that it is safe.

Seek urgent medical assessment if an object is embedded, the eye was struck at speed, a chemical entered it, vision changes, pain is severe, or you cannot open the eye. Get prompt advice if redness, gritty discomfort or watering continues after rinsing, or if discharge develops. Chemical exposure needs immediate, continuous rinsing with clean water while arranging emergency help.
