What does rash with fever feel like with Stevens-Johnson syndrome?

The illness may begin with fever, fatigue, sore throat, cough, or burning eyes before the skin changes become obvious. A rash can then become painful or sensitive to touch, with dusky patches, blisters, or skin that loosens. Sores may affect the lips, mouth, eyes, or genital area, making swallowing, urinating, or opening the eyes difficult.

This is a medical emergency pattern, often considered in connection with a recent medicine or infection. A photograph or early description cannot confirm the diagnosis, and a rapidly changing painful rash needs in-person assessment.

Go to an emergency department immediately if this pattern is present, especially after starting or changing a medicine. Take the medicine packaging or a written list of prescriptions, over-the-counter products, and supplements. Do not take another dose of a suspected medicine unless an emergency clinician specifically instructs you.

Avoid applying new creams, breaking blisters, or removing loose skin. If eye symptoms are present, avoid contact lenses and tell the emergency team promptly.

Do not wait for the rash to spread. Emergency care is needed for fever with skin pain, blisters, peeling, purple or dusky patches, mouth or eye sores, facial swelling, trouble breathing, confusion, or inability to drink. Eye pain or light sensitivity also needs immediate attention.

Ask which medicines should be recorded as possible triggers, how the eyes and other mucosal surfaces will be checked, and what warning signs require returning after discharge. Ask how to communicate the reaction before receiving future prescriptions.
