What does radiating leg pain feel like with piriformis syndrome?

Short answer
Radiating Leg Pain is a common presentation of Piriformis Syndrome and may feel like aching, burning or shooting pain from the buttock down the leg.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Starting area
- Often deep in the buttock
- Possible sensations
- Aching, burning, shooting, tingling or numbness
The usual pattern
Most people with Piriformis Syndrome notice radiating leg pain beginning deep in the buttock and travelling along the back of the thigh; it can sometimes extend toward the calf or foot. Sitting for a long time, climbing stairs, running, or turning the hip may make the buttock discomfort and leg symptoms more noticeable.
The sensation may include tingling, pins and needles or numbness if the sciatic nerve is irritated. Symptoms can be one-sided, but the distribution and examination matter because lower-back disorders and other conditions can create a similar pattern.
What may help while arranging care
Break up prolonged sitting, use positions that reduce pressure on the buttock, and keep activity gentle while symptoms are irritable. A physiotherapist or doctor can assess hip movement, muscle tenderness, nerve function and the lower back. Treatment may include graded exercise, mobility work and changes to activities that reproduce the pain.
When to seek urgent help
Get urgent assessment for rapidly worsening weakness, difficulty walking, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or inner thighs. Prompt review is also sensible after significant injury or when pain comes with fever or severe unexplained illness.
Questions to ask
Does my examination point to the piriformis area, the spine, or another source? Which sitting and exercise changes are suitable for me? How will we monitor nerve strength and decide whether further testing is needed?

Questions people ask
Is pain from piriformis syndrome always severe?
No. It may range from a local buttock ache to more intrusive leg pain, and symptoms can vary with sitting and activity.
Can stretching fix the problem?
Stretching may be part of care for some people, but the right exercise depends on the examination and should not reproduce escalating nerve symptoms.
