What does a mouth sore that does not heal feel like with tongue cancer?

The sore may be on the side, top, or underside of the tongue, or in nearby mouth tissue. It can catch against teeth, make speaking or chewing uncomfortable, or be accompanied by numbness, a thickened area, bleeding, a persistent red or white patch, or a lump in the neck. Trauma from biting or a sharp tooth, infection, and other mouth problems can cause similar symptoms, so the symptom pattern does not identify its cause.

A dentist or doctor may inspect the tongue and mouth, feel the neck, and arrange a tissue sample or specialist referral when a lesion persists or looks unusual.

Arrange a dental or medical appointment and describe the exact location, changes in sensation, and effect on eating or speech. Use a soft toothbrush, avoid tobacco and alcohol, and choose foods that do not scrape or sting. Check for a sharp tooth or dental appliance, but do not assume removing irritation at home explains a sore that continues.

Seek prompt assessment for a sore with numbness, bleeding, a firm edge, a neck lump, increasing difficulty moving the tongue, or pain that is worsening. Seek urgent help if swelling makes breathing or swallowing difficult.

Ask where the lesion is located, whether a tooth or appliance could be rubbing it, whether a biopsy is needed, and how to manage eating and speaking discomfort while tests are arranged.
