Oral leukoplakia often appears as a white or grey patch that cannot be rubbed away. The surface may feel uneven, hardened, or ridged, and some people notice soreness when eating spicy, acidic, or abrasive foods. It may occur on the cheek, gums, tongue, or other mouth lining. A white patch can have more than one explanation, including friction, tobacco exposure, fungal infection, or another tissue change; a visual check cannot settle the diagnosis.

A clinician may examine the patch, review possible sources of friction or irritation, and recommend a biopsy when the area is persistent, changing, or concerning.
