The area may look like an ulcer, a red or white patch, or a break in the lining of the cheek, gum, palate, tongue, or lip. It can bleed with brushing, catch on a tooth, or make chewing and swallowing uncomfortable. A persistent sore can also result from repeated biting, a sharp tooth, dentures, infection, or another mouth condition, so its appearance and duration need clinical review.

A dentist, doctor, or oral specialist may examine the whole mouth and neck. They may feel nearby tissues and arrange a biopsy if the area remains unexplained.

Book a dental or medical assessment for a sore that does not heal. Keep the area clean with a soft toothbrush, choose softer foods if chewing hurts, and avoid tobacco, alcohol, and foods that sting the sore. Check whether a broken tooth, filling, or denture edge rubs the area, but do not delay an examination by repeatedly changing home treatments.
