What does persistent itching feel like with Hodgkin lymphoma?

The itch can affect the trunk, limbs or several areas at once and may continue even when there is little visible change on the skin. Scratching can cause redness, marks, thickening or broken skin. Some people also notice drenching night sweats, fever, unusual tiredness or painless swelling in the neck, chest or armpit. These accompanying symptoms have many possible causes, and itching alone cannot identify Hodgkin lymphoma. A clinician considers the whole pattern and examines any swelling or skin change.

Arrange a medical review if itching persists, interrupts sleep, or comes with unexplained swelling, night sweats, fever, fatigue or weight change. Write down its locations, timing, triggers, visible skin changes and any new medicines. Gentle moisturiser, cool water and loose clothing may reduce irritation while you wait. A clinician may examine lymph nodes and skin and choose blood tests or imaging based on the findings.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, sudden facial swelling, fainting, severe weakness, rapidly spreading blistering or peeling, or fever with a hot, painful rash. Contact a clinician promptly if swollen glands enlarge quickly, become painful, or are accompanied by persistent fever or marked deterioration.

Ask what may be causing the itch, whether swollen areas need imaging or sampling, which skin measures are suitable, and which changes should prompt urgent contact. Mention night symptoms and any whole-body changes.
