What does persistent indigestion feel like with Oesophageal Cancer?

Indigestion associated with an oesophageal problem may resemble reflux: burning behind the breastbone, an acidic taste, belching, or discomfort after eating. Some people notice food moving down less easily, pain when swallowing, a sensation of food sticking, hoarseness, or a cough. These symptoms can have many non-cancer causes, so their presence does not establish Oesophageal Cancer.

Contact a clinician when indigestion is persistent, changes from your usual pattern, or occurs with swallowing symptoms. Explain when discomfort starts, whether solid or liquid food is affected, any reflux, appetite change, vomiting, or weight change. The clinician may examine you and arrange tests to look at the oesophagus when needed. Keep taking prescribed medicines as directed unless a clinician advises otherwise.

Seek urgent help if food becomes stuck, you cannot swallow fluids, you vomit blood, your stools are black, or you develop severe chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or repeated vomiting. Prompt assessment is needed for these warning signs.
