What does persistent cough feel like with non-small cell lung cancer?

The cough may be dry or productive, feel tickly or deep in the chest, or become different from a long-standing smoker's cough. It may accompany breathlessness, wheezing, hoarseness, chest pain, fatigue, or mucus with blood. Airway irritation and narrowing can make coughing frequent or tiring. Similar symptoms occur with infection, asthma, reflux, and chronic airway disease, so the symptom pattern does not identify non-small cell lung cancer by itself.

Arrange a review for a cough that does not settle, changes character, or keeps returning. Record triggers, mucus, fever, breathlessness, chest pain, smoking history, and workplace exposures. A clinician may examine your lungs and choose chest imaging or other investigations according to your symptoms and history.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing blood, sudden chest pain, fainting, blue lips, or new confusion. Worsening breathlessness at rest needs prompt attention even if the cough itself seems mild.
