What does periods stopped feel like with imperforate hymen?

An imperforate hymen is tissue that completely covers the vaginal opening. Menstrual cycles may still begin internally, but the blood cannot pass out normally. This can create pain or pressure that returns in a monthly pattern, even though there is no period seen on underwear or a pad. A bulging membrane near the vaginal opening, constipation or urinary difficulty can occur when the collected blood presses on nearby structures. The condition is present from birth and is different from a concern about the appearance or “tightness” of the hymen.

Arrange an assessment with a doctor or adolescent gynaecology service if periods have not started alongside recurring pelvic pain or pressure. A gentle external examination and, when needed, imaging can clarify the anatomy. Do not try to puncture or cut the tissue yourself. Treatment is a planned minor procedure that creates an opening so retained blood can drain; the clinician will explain aftercare and what to expect.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, vomiting, fever, inability to pass urine, fainting or a swollen abdomen. These symptoms can indicate significant pressure or another urgent pelvic problem. A young person with suspected obstruction should be assessed promptly, even if they feel embarrassed or have not had visible bleeding.
