What does pelvic ultrasound treat?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce views of structures such as the uterus, womb lining, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic area. Depending on the clinical question, it may be performed through the lower abdomen with a full bladder or with an internal probe after consent and preparation. The images can help investigate pain, unusual bleeding, an absent period, a pelvic mass, or concerns about early pregnancy. A scan can identify findings that need follow-up, but it does not by itself explain every symptom or confirm every diagnosis.

Follow the appointment instructions about drinking water, clothing, and whether an internal scan is planned. Tell the sonographer if you are pregnant, have pain, or do not want an internal examination. Ask how and when results will be explained. Further examination, blood tests, repeat imaging, or a specialist review may be needed. The scan itself is usually brief, though pressure from the probe or a full bladder can be uncomfortable.

Do not wait for a routine scan if you have sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, or feel seriously unwell. With a possible pregnancy, urgent pain or bleeding needs prompt assessment because ultrasound is only one part of checking what is happening.
