What does palpitations feel like with dehydration?

When the body loses fluid, the circulating volume can fall and the heart may beat faster to keep blood moving. You might feel pounding, racing, or fluttering in the chest, throat, or neck. Thirst, a dry mouth, darker urine, headache, weakness, dizziness, muscle cramps, or feeling faint can occur at the same time. Heat, sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or not drinking enough can contribute.

Palpitations are not specific to dehydration. Caffeine, anxiety, medicines, anaemia, and heart-rhythm problems can feel similar, so a persistent or unexplained episode deserves assessment.

If you are awake and able to drink, take frequent small sips of water or an appropriate oral rehydration drink, especially after fluid loss. Rest somewhere cool and avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and excess caffeine while symptoms settle. If vomiting prevents drinking, or symptoms continue despite replacing fluids, arrange prompt medical care.

Seek emergency help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, chest pain, severe breathlessness, seizure, or a heartbeat that remains very fast or irregular. Urgent assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down, have very little urine, or are becoming difficult to wake.
