What does palpitations feel like with atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation can make the heartbeat feel uneven, as though beats are arriving unpredictably, racing, pounding, or pausing briefly. Some people notice fluttering in the chest, throat, or neck; others feel tired, short of breath, light-headed, or less able to exercise. Episodes may start and stop, or the irregular rhythm may continue. Some people have no noticeable sensation, so the absence of palpitations does not exclude a rhythm problem.

Palpitations can also result from stress, fever, stimulants, anaemia, or other rhythm changes. A heartbeat sensation cannot identify its cause by itself.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new or repeated irregular heartbeat. Note when it began, whether it is continuous, and any breathlessness, dizziness, or chest discomfort. An ECG and monitoring may be used to check the rhythm. If atrial fibrillation is diagnosed, treatment is tailored to rhythm control, heart rate, and stroke-risk factors.

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, or sudden weakness or numbness. Sudden trouble speaking, seeing, or walking also needs emergency assessment.
