What does painful urination feel like with gonorrhoea?

Painful Urination is a very common presentation of Gonorrhoea, often causing a pronounced burning or cutting sensation while urine passes. The discomfort may be felt along the urethra and can continue briefly after urination. Some people also notice discharge from the penis or vagina, pelvic discomfort, or irritation at the urine opening; others have few symptoms.

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that can inflame the urethra. Inflammation makes the lining more sensitive to urine, producing burning, soreness, or an urgent need to pass urine. Symptoms can also involve the throat, rectum, or reproductive organs after exposure at those sites. Only testing can confirm the infection, and symptoms can overlap with chlamydia or a urinary infection.

Arrange sexual-health or primary-care testing soon if you have burning, discharge, or a recent possible exposure. Do not have vaginal, anal, or oral sex until a clinician has advised you about treatment and partner care. Tell the clinician about the sites of sexual contact so testing is considered for the throat or rectum as well as urine or genital samples. Partners may need assessment too.

Seek urgent medical help for fever, severe lower abdominal or testicular pain, a swollen painful joint, a spreading rash, or feeling faint or seriously unwell. Prompt assessment is also needed during pregnancy, or if eye pain, redness, or discharge develops after possible contact. Do not wait for symptoms to settle before arranging testing.
