What does painful breastfeeding feel like with a blocked milk duct?

You may notice a sore lump or wedge-shaped area that feels fuller than the surrounding breast. The nipple can hurt when the baby latches, while the deeper breast feels bruised, pressured, or throbbing. The tender area may become less firm after feeding or expressing, although soreness can linger. A blocked duct can happen when milk is not draining comfortably, including after a change in feeding pattern or pressure on the breast.

Continue feeding responsively if it is comfortable, and check that the baby is well positioned and latched. Rest, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for swelling, and wear a supportive bra that does not press on the area. Gentle handling is preferable to deep massage or forceful pumping, which can worsen inflammation. A lactation professional can review latch and feeding technique.

Contact a clinician if the tender area is worsening, does not start improving, or you develop fever, chills, marked redness, or feel unwell. Seek urgent advice for severe illness, rapidly spreading redness, or a collection that remains distinctly swollen and painful. Breastfeeding can often continue while you receive guidance.
