What does ovarian cancer debulking surgery treat?

This operation, also called cytoreductive surgery, is used when cancer has spread within the abdomen or pelvis and an operation can safely remove tumour that can be seen or felt. The surgeon may remove the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, nearby fatty tissue, or other involved areas, depending on where disease is found. The aim is to leave as little visible cancer as possible so other treatment can work against remaining microscopic cells. It does not treat every cancer that causes abdominal symptoms, and the exact operation depends on scans, examination, overall health, and findings during surgery.

It may be part of treatment for Ovarian Cancer, Fallopian Tube Cancer, or Primary Peritoneal Cancer. Surgery can be planned before drug treatment or after it, depending on the cancer team’s assessment.

Ask which organs may need removal, whether drug treatment is planned before or after surgery, and what recovery at home may involve. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous operations, and any change in bowel or bladder function. Arrange help with meals, transport, and daily activities while movement is limited. Your surgeon can explain the intended extent of surgery and what may change if the cancer is more widespread than imaging showed.

After surgery, contact the treating team promptly for fever, worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, increasing redness or drainage from the wound, new shortness of breath, or inability to pass urine. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or sudden confusion. Before treatment, urgent assessment is also needed for severe abdominal swelling with vomiting or inability to pass stool or gas.
