What does numbness and tingling feel like with stroke?

Stroke-related altered sensation may feel like sudden loss of feeling, pins and needles, or heaviness in the face, arm, or leg. It may affect one side and make that limb feel unfamiliar or difficult to control. Numbness can appear with weakness, a drooping side of the face, slurred or confused speech, vision changes, dizziness, or a severe headache. Symptoms can vary, and numbness by itself cannot confirm the cause. The key concern is a new, abrupt change in neurological function.

If these symptoms are happening now, call emergency services immediately. Note the time the person was last known to be well, keep them safe and seated, and do not drive them yourself. Do not give food, drink, or medicines unless emergency professionals advise it. Even if symptoms improve, urgent assessment is still needed because temporary improvement does not remove the risk of a serious event.

Treat sudden one-sided numbness, facial drooping, arm weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, loss of vision, severe imbalance, or an unexplained severe headache as an emergency. Call immediately rather than waiting to see whether the sensation settles. A person with new neurological symptoms should be assessed urgently even when there is no pain.
