What does nosebleed feel like with hypertension?

Nosebleed is a common presentation of Hypertension, but the bleeding itself usually feels like warmth or dripping. You may notice blood from one nostril, a metallic taste, or blood at the back of the throat. Some nosebleeds are noticed by sight rather than pain, while dryness or irritation may cause stinging.

Hypertension can place extra strain on blood vessels, but a nosebleed does not measure blood pressure and cannot confirm its cause. Dry air, nose-picking, infection, allergies, injury, and medicines that affect clotting are other possibilities. A severe blood-pressure problem is more concerning when nosebleeding occurs with symptoms such as chest pain, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or changes in vision.

Sit upright, lean forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose without checking repeatedly. Keep breathing through your mouth and let blood drain out rather than swallowing it. Do not lie flat or tilt your head back. Afterward, avoid forceful blowing and check your blood pressure only if you have a reliable monitor and can do so calmly; do not change prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek emergency help for a nosebleed with chest pain, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, new weakness, severe headache, or vision change. Urgent assessment is also needed when bleeding is heavy or does not settle with sustained pressure. Book a review for repeated episodes or unexpectedly high readings, even when you feel well.
