What does nosebleed feel like with common cold?

Nosebleed is a common presentation of Common Cold and may feel like warm blood flowing from one nostril. The bleeding can leave a metallic taste or a feeling of liquid at the back of the throat. A blocked, dry, or irritated nose may sting, especially after repeated blowing.

A cold can inflame the lining inside the nose. Congestion encourages mouth breathing, while dry air, rubbing, and forceful nose-blowing can disturb small surface blood vessels. Blood may appear bright red, and a small amount can mix with mucus. This symptom alone does not identify the cause; allergies, nasal irritation, and some medicines can also contribute.

Sit upright and lean slightly forward so blood does not run down your throat. Pinch the soft part of your nose continuously with thumb and finger while breathing through your mouth. Spitting out blood is preferable to swallowing it. Once it has stopped, avoid picking, vigorous blowing, hot drinks, and strenuous activity for a while; use a humidifier or saline spray if dryness is contributing.

Get urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint or short of breath, blood is flowing into the throat despite pressure, or the nosebleed followed a significant injury. Arrange a medical review if episodes keep returning, last longer than expected despite firm pressure, or you take a medicine that affects clotting.
