What does a nosebleed feel like with Allergic Rhinitis?

Allergic Rhinitis can make the inside of the nose itchy, swollen and dry. Sneezing, blowing your nose or rubbing irritated tissue may then trigger a small bleed. You may notice a metallic taste, blood at the nostril or a slow trickle into the throat, alongside a blocked or runny nose and watery eyes. Nosebleeds have many possible causes, so this pattern does not by itself establish Allergic Rhinitis.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward and breathe through your mouth. Pinch the soft part of your nose continuously while keeping your head forward; swallowing blood can make you feel sick. Once bleeding stops, avoid nose blowing, picking, heavy exertion and hot drinks for a while. Discuss allergy control with a clinician or pharmacist, especially before using a medicated nasal spray, because technique can affect irritation.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes dizziness or breathing difficulty, or does not settle with sustained pressure. Arrange a review for frequent episodes, easy bruising, bleeding from other sites or a blocked nostril that does not improve. Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines and nasal products.

Ask whether allergies, dryness or a nasal medicine may be irritating the lining, how to use sprays safely, and whether another cause needs checking. Ask which symptoms should prompt urgent review if bleeding returns.
