What does a non-healing skin sore feel like with actinic keratosis?

Skin Sore That Does Not Heal is a common presentation of Actinic Keratosis. The area may feel rough, dry, scaly, crusted, tender, or mildly sore rather than smooth. It can resemble a persistent scab or a small irritated patch, and rubbing or washing may make it sting.

Actinic keratosis develops in skin that has had substantial sun exposure. A rough spot can be easier to feel than to see, especially on the face, ears, scalp, forearms, or backs of the hands. Several skin conditions can cause a sore that lingers, so feel and appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. A clinician may examine the surface closely and decide whether testing is needed.

Keep the area clean, avoid picking the crust, and protect it from further sun exposure with clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen. Take a clear photograph and note changes in size, texture, bleeding, tenderness, or crusting. Arrange a skin assessment if the spot persists, returns after seeming to heal, or changes noticeably.

Seek prompt medical advice for repeated bleeding, increasing pain, pus, spreading redness, rapid growth, or a sore that remains open. Urgent care is appropriate if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure or if you feel seriously unwell.
