What does nipple discharge feel like with intraductal papilloma?

An intraductal papilloma is a small growth in a milk duct. Discharge may appear as a spot on clothing or a drop at the nipple, rather than as a sensation inside the breast. It can be clear, watery, milky, or blood-stained. Some people feel a small, tender area beneath the nipple, while others have no lump or pain. The fluid may come out on its own or after pressure, but its appearance cannot confirm the cause. Other duct conditions can produce similar discharge.

Book a clinical assessment for new or ongoing discharge, particularly if it is spontaneous or comes from one side. Record the colour, whether it is thick or watery, and whether it comes from a single opening. Avoid frequent squeezing, which can irritate the nipple and produce more fluid. Tell the clinician about a lump, tenderness, pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous breast procedures, and any medicines. Examination and breast imaging may be used to locate a duct problem; a tissue sample or duct procedure may be discussed when needed.

Seek prompt medical advice if discharge is bloody, clear and one-sided, or accompanied by a new lump, nipple inversion, a rash, crusting, redness, swelling, or persistent pain. Fever with a hot, painful breast also needs timely review. These signs do not diagnose a particular condition, but they should not be ignored because treatment depends on the underlying finding.
