What does nipple discharge feel like with duct ectasia?

Duct ectasia happens when a milk duct beneath the nipple becomes widened and its contents become thicker. Discharge may be sticky or watery and can look green, yellow, brown, or another colour. The nipple or nearby areola may feel sore, irritated, or sensitive. Some people notice a firm area behind the nipple, while others have no lump or pain. These features overlap with other breast conditions, so fluid colour and sensation cannot establish the diagnosis by themselves.

Arrange a clinician assessment for new or persistent discharge, especially if it appears without squeezing. Note which breast is affected, the colour and texture, whether it is spontaneous, and any lump, redness, or fever. Avoid repeatedly expressing the nipple. A clinician may examine the breast and arrange imaging or other tests when needed. Warm compresses may ease tenderness, but use them only if comfortable and do not delay assessment.

Seek prompt care for blood-stained or clear discharge, a new lump, nipple inversion, skin changes, fever, redness, or worsening pain. Urgent assessment is especially important if the breast becomes hot and swollen or you feel unwell, because infection may need treatment. Emergency help is needed for fainting or severe systemic symptoms.

Ask whether the pattern fits duct ectasia, whether an infection or another breast condition should be excluded, and whether imaging is needed. Ask how to manage tenderness and which changes should lead you to return sooner.
