What does nipple discharge feel like with breast cancer?

Discharge is fluid that comes from the nipple; it is not usually something you feel moving inside the breast. You may notice a spot on clothing, moisture at the nipple, or fluid that appears after gentle pressure. Concerning features can include discharge that happens on its own, is from one side, is clear or blood-stained, or occurs with a new lump, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, or a persistent change in breast shape. Many non-cancerous conditions can also cause discharge, so appearance alone cannot identify its cause.

Note the colour, thickness, side, whether it appears spontaneously, and any associated pain or lump. Avoid repeatedly squeezing the nipple, as stimulation can keep discharge going. Arrange a clinical assessment for new, unexplained, or persistent discharge. The clinician may examine the breast and decide whether imaging or a sample is appropriate based on your age, history, and findings.

Seek prompt medical review for spontaneous discharge from one breast, blood-stained or clear discharge, a new breast or armpit lump, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, redness with fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. Emergency care is appropriate for severe illness, fainting, or a rapidly spreading painful breast infection.

Ask what examination or imaging is appropriate, whether medicines or pregnancy could explain the change, and which features should trigger faster follow-up. Bring a record of the discharge and mention prior breast problems, procedures, and relevant family history.
