What does first-time seizure feel like with glioblastoma?

First-Time Seizure is a very common presentation of Glioblastoma, though a first seizure is not specific to one diagnosis. Symptoms may begin with a brief unusual smell, taste, visual effect, emotion, or tingling. Awareness can change, with staring or repetitive movements. Some seizures cause stiffening and jerking of the limbs, loss of balance, or loss of consciousness, followed by tiredness or confusion.

Glioblastoma is a tumour of the brain that can alter the tissue around it. Irritation, pressure, or swelling may disrupt electrical signals and create a seizure. The exact experience can vary with the area involved, and a seizure alone cannot determine whether glioblastoma or another condition is responsible. Medical assessment is needed to interpret the event.

Protect the person from nearby hazards and place a folded jacket or other soft item under the head. Turn them onto their side if you can do so safely, loosen tight clothing, and remove objects that could cause injury. Never restrain their movements or put anything in their mouth. Note the time and call for medical advice after a first seizure.

Call emergency services for a prolonged seizure, repeated events without full recovery, breathing problems, severe injury, or failure to wake normally. New weakness, speech difficulty, a severe or rapidly worsening headache, persistent vomiting, or marked confusion also requires urgent assessment. Someone with a known brain tumour should follow their oncology team's emergency plan.

Ask whether brain imaging, an electrical brain test, or medicine is recommended. Clarify what symptoms should trigger emergency help and how to use any prescribed rescue medicine. Discuss driving, bathing, swimming, sleep, alcohol, and activities involving heights or machinery until your team gives personal advice.
