What does a new lump or swelling feel like with breast cancer?

A breast-cancer-related change may feel firm, distinct, or different from the surrounding breast tissue. It may be painless, and it may be noticed in the breast, near the armpit, or as a broader area of swelling. A change can also involve skin dimpling, nipple inversion, discharge, or a difference in breast shape. Many other conditions can cause lumps or swelling, including cysts, hormonal changes, and infection, so touch cannot determine the cause.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new lump, swelling, or persistent change, even if it is not painful. The clinician may examine both breasts and the armpits and arrange imaging such as ultrasound or mammography according to your age, symptoms, and history. Do not squeeze the area or delay assessment while watching it indefinitely.

Seek prompt care if swelling develops quickly, the breast becomes red and hot, you have fever, or the nipple turns inward or releases blood-stained fluid. Urgent help is needed for severe illness, rapidly worsening redness, or difficulty breathing. A new change without these warning signs still merits a routine appointment.

Ask what the examination found, which imaging is suitable, and whether the change needs follow-up after imaging. Mention when you first noticed it, whether it varies with your menstrual cycle, and any family history. Ask which changes should prompt an earlier review.
