What does neck stiffness feel like with tension headache?

The neck may feel tense across both sides, with soreness at the back of the head, temples or shoulders. The headache is commonly described as pressure or a band-like ache, and movement does not always make it worse. Long screen sessions, jaw clenching, stress, fatigue or an awkward sleeping position can contribute. Similar symptoms occur in other headache disorders, so the pattern and any additional symptoms are relevant.

Pause the activity that is straining your neck, relax your shoulders and take a gentle walk or mobility break if comfortable. Hydration, regular meals, sleep and a quieter environment may help. Check your screen height and avoid holding a phone between your shoulder and ear. If you use over-the-counter pain relief, follow the label and ask a pharmacist if it is suitable for you.

Arrange a review if headaches are frequent, changing, difficult to control or interfering with sleep and work. Seek urgent care for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, or a headache after a head injury.
