What does a neck lump feel like with a thyroid nodule?

A thyroid nodule may feel smooth, firm, or rounded beneath the skin at the front of the neck. It can move as you swallow because the thyroid rises with swallowing. Some nodules are too small or deep to feel and cause no symptoms. Others create a pressure sensation, mild discomfort, or a visible fullness. These features overlap with cysts, thyroid enlargement, lymph nodes, and other causes, so texture alone cannot identify the diagnosis.

Book an appointment if a neck lump persists, becomes more noticeable, or is found unexpectedly. A clinician can check its position and the rest of the neck, then arrange an ultrasound when appropriate. Blood tests may help assess thyroid function, while a needle sample is considered from the examination and ultrasound findings rather than from feel alone.

Seek prompt care for trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, or a lasting change in your voice. New severe pain, redness, or fever with neck swelling also warrants timely review. If none of these warning signs are present, arrange a routine assessment rather than trying to diagnose the lump by repeatedly touching it.
