What does a neck lump feel like with thyroid cancer?

A thyroid-related lump can feel firm or solid and may be easier to notice at the lower front of the neck. It may move upward when you swallow because the thyroid moves with swallowing. Some lumps cause no pain, while others create pressure, a tight collar sensation, or a feeling that food is catching. A lump can also arise from a thyroid nodule, an enlarged lymph node, or another non-cancerous condition, so touch is not a diagnosis.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new, persistent, or enlarging lump. The clinician may examine your neck, ask about voice or swallowing changes, and arrange an ultrasound. Further tests depend on the ultrasound appearance and your history. Do not repeatedly press the area, because this can make it sore and does not reveal what the lump is.

Seek prompt medical help if the lump is growing quickly, breathing feels difficult, swallowing becomes hard, or your voice stays hoarse. Urgent assessment is also sensible when neck swelling comes with severe pain, redness, or feeling acutely unwell. These warning signs need attention because swelling can affect the airway or nearby structures.

Ask whether the lump seems to arise from the thyroid or a lymph node, what the ultrasound shows, and whether thyroid blood tests or a needle sample are appropriate. You can also ask what change should prompt an earlier review and how results will be communicated.
