What does a neck lump feel like with nasopharyngeal cancer?

Neck Lump is a very common presentation of Nasopharyngeal Cancer, often as a painless swelling in the side of the neck. It may feel firm or less mobile than surrounding tissue and can be noticed before symptoms in the nose or throat. These features are not specific, and infections or other conditions can produce a similar swelling.

The nasopharynx is the upper part of the throat behind the nose. A lump may be an enlarged lymph node linked to disease in that area. Ongoing blocked hearing on one side, ringing in an ear, nosebleeds, nasal blockage, headaches, or a persistent sore throat should be mentioned during assessment, but none of these symptoms confirms cancer on its own.

Arrange a medical appointment for a neck swelling that persists or changes, especially when it has no clear recent infection. Keep a note of its position, growth, tenderness, and any one-sided nose or ear symptoms. A clinician may examine the nose, throat, ears, and neck and may recommend a camera examination, imaging, or tissue sampling.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, heavy nosebleeding, or rapidly increasing swelling. Prompt review is warranted for new facial weakness, severe headache, or sudden hearing loss. These warning signs need attention even before the cause of the lump is known.

Ask whether the nose, throat, and ear symptoms point to a need for specialist examination, which imaging is appropriate, and whether a biopsy is needed. Ask what to do if the lump changes while you are waiting.
