What does a neck lump feel like with head and neck cancer?

Neck Lump is a very common presentation of Head and Neck Cancer, although feel and location cannot confirm a diagnosis. The swelling may be firm, painless, and slow to change, or it may be tender when infection is also present. It can sit beneath the jaw, along the side of the neck, or near the collarbone.

Head and neck cancer includes cancers arising in areas such as the mouth, throat, voice box, nose, and nearby tissues. A neck lump may represent an enlarged lymph node receiving drainage from one of these areas. Infection, dental problems, cysts, and other non-cancer causes can feel similar, so a clinician may inspect the mouth and throat and examine the neck before choosing scans or a biopsy.

Book an appointment for a lump that remains, grows, becomes fixed, or appears without a clear short-lived illness. Record its position and any related hoarseness, mouth sore, swallowing change, ear pain, or unexplained weight change. Avoid applying heat or trying to drain the swelling yourself.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow, drooling, or rapidly worsening swelling. Arrange prompt medical review for coughing or vomiting blood, a persistent voice change, or a mouth ulcer that does not heal.
