What does nausea feel like with pancreatitis?

Pancreatitis-related nausea may feel persistent rather than brief, with discomfort high in the abdomen that can spread toward the back. Eating may make the discomfort or nausea worse. Vomiting, fever, a swollen or tender abdomen, and feeling generally unwell can occur too. These symptoms can have several causes, so the sensation alone cannot identify pancreatitis; the combination, timing, and severity matter.

Strong or continuing upper-abdominal pain with nausea should be assessed promptly. Until you receive advice, avoid alcohol and do not force food if it worsens vomiting. Take small sips of fluid only if you can keep them down, and record when the pain and nausea began, whether pain reaches your back, and any recent medicines or alcohol exposure.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, faintness, confusion, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or an abdomen that becomes markedly swollen or tender. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down or feel weak and dehydrated.

Ask whether your symptoms need urgent testing, which medicines are safe, and what you should eat or drink while recovering. Tell the clinician about pain spreading to your back, vomiting, fever, previous gallbladder problems, alcohol use, and prescribed or non-prescribed medicines.
