Short answer

Nausea is a common presentation of Heat Exhaustion. It may feel like queasiness, an unsettled stomach, or an urge to vomit after being in heat or exercising. It can occur with heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, thirst, clammy skin, and muscle cramps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the feeling may mean

Heat exhaustion can develop when the body loses fluid and salt through sweating and cannot cool itself efficiently. Nausea may come in waves, worsen when you stand or keep moving, or be followed by vomiting. You may also feel unusually tired, faint, irritable, or unable to continue an activity. The combination of recent heat exposure, sweating, and these symptoms gives more context than nausea alone.

Move away from the heat as soon as symptoms begin. Nausea can make drinking difficult, so take small, frequent sips rather than forcing a large amount at once.

What to do now

Stop exertion and rest in a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned place. Loosen extra clothing, place cool wet cloths on the skin, and use a fan if available. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink if you are awake and able to swallow. Avoid alcohol and further exercise while recovering. Stay with the person and check whether the symptoms are easing after cooling and fluids.

If vomiting prevents drinking, do not keep pushing fluids. Arrange medical advice because dehydration can worsen and another cause of nausea may need assessment.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help if the person becomes confused, has a seizure, loses consciousness, has very hot skin, cannot drink, or is not improving after moving to a cool place. These signs can indicate a more serious heat illness. Do not give fluids to someone who is drowsy, confused, or unable to swallow safely, and do not leave them alone while waiting for help.

Get prompt medical advice for repeated vomiting, fainting, chest discomfort, severe headache, worsening weakness, or symptoms that persist despite cooling and rest. Older adults, children, pregnant people, and anyone with a chronic illness may need a lower threshold for assessment.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Could dehydration, infection, medication, or another problem be contributing to the nausea? What fluids are suitable for me? When can I return to work, exercise, or outdoor activity? Do my medical conditions or medicines increase my risk during hot weather?

Questions people ask

Can heat exhaustion cause vomiting?

Yes. Nausea may progress to vomiting, especially if fluid loss continues. Stop activity, cool the person, and seek medical advice if vomiting prevents drinking or keeps happening.

How can I tell whether nausea is related to heat?

A recent period in hot conditions or strenuous activity, together with sweating, weakness, dizziness, thirst, headache, or cramps, can support a heat-related explanation. Nausea by itself does not identify the cause.

When is nausea with heat exposure an emergency?

Confusion, a seizure, loss of consciousness, very hot skin, inability to drink, or failure to improve with cooling requires emergency help.
