What does nausea feel like with gastritis?

Gastritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. The discomfort can sit high in the abdomen and may come with burning, aching, bloating, frequent burping, reduced appetite, or feeling full sooner than expected. Nausea may be stronger after meals, when the stomach is empty, or after an irritant such as alcohol or an anti-inflammatory medicine. Nausea alone cannot identify the cause, because indigestion, infection, medicines, pregnancy and other conditions can feel similar.

Take small sips of water and choose smaller, gentle meals while the stomach settles. Avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen the burning or queasiness. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a medicine could be irritating your stomach. Keep a note of when nausea begins, what you eat, and whether pain, vomiting or dark stools occur.

Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black tar-like stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange a medical assessment if nausea keeps returning, lasts beyond a short illness, causes weight loss, or comes with repeated vomiting. A clinician can review medicines and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
