What does nausea feel like with acid reflux?

You may feel unsettled in the upper stomach or throat, as though you might vomit, without actually being sick. Reflux can also bring a sour or bitter taste, repeated burping, liquid or food coming back up, throat irritation, or burning behind the breastbone. Symptoms may be more noticeable after a large meal, when bending over, or when lying down. Nausea has many possible causes, so this pattern alone cannot identify reflux.

Eat smaller meals, slow down while eating, and remain upright after food rather than lying down immediately. Notice whether particular foods, alcohol, caffeine, or late meals trigger symptoms. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen and follow any treatment plan prescribed for reflux. Do not repeatedly use over-the-counter remedies without checking the label or asking a pharmacist, especially if you take other medicines.

Book a medical review if nausea or reflux keeps returning, affects sleep, causes frequent vomiting, or makes swallowing difficult. Seek urgent care for chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, vomit containing blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. New or intense chest symptoms should be treated as urgent rather than assumed to be reflux.
