What do discoloured nails feel like with nail fungus?

Most people with Nail Fungus notice discoloured nails, often yellow, white, tan, or brown. The nail may become thicker, rougher, brittle, crumbly, or partly separated from the nail bed. Pressure from shoes can cause tenderness, and an affected toenail may feel awkward when walking, although early infection can have little or no discomfort.

Fungus is not the only cause of a changed nail. Repeated injury, psoriasis, eczema, bacterial changes, and some medicines can look similar. Examination may include checking the nail and taking a sample before treatment is chosen.

Keep feet clean and dry, change damp socks, choose shoes with room for the toes, and trim nails straight across without digging into the corners. Do not share nail clippers or files. Avoid scraping the nail or using leftover medication, since the wrong treatment can delay the correct diagnosis.
